A Message From Todd
Dear Fellow Court One Alum:
I write to raise awareness for a cause that is near and dear to my heart, and request your help.
Twenty-three years ago, at the urging of my long-time coach, Rick Ferman, and with the help of my father and others, Todd Martin Youth Leadership (“TMYL”) was founded. The objective was simple: give back to a community and sport that had given me so much.
TMYL has evolved over all these years, and bolstered its efforts and outreach along the way. Thousands of under-resourced youth have been helped, and I proudly report that our foundation is as strong as ever. Annually, we continue to provide several hundred of the Lansing area’s under-resourced youth with life skills, leadership skills, academic tutoring, and yes, tennis instruction. This is accomplished through a variety of year-round after school and summer programs.
What is now known as Court One Athletic Clubs played a formative role in my childhood, and I am proud that several alumni are part of the TMYL board of directors and staff. As a former Court One student, and having grown up in the greater-Lansing area, you may have similar feelings to mine regarding the deep emotional connections to tennis, and our childhood community.
While not perfect by any stretch (ex: the weather, getting yelled at by Rick, or Bill, or Sue [or all three!], etc.), tennis and the community gave us a foundation for success on and off the court. Life-long values were instilled and, positive characteristics, most notably respect for the game, for our peers, and for the great privileges being provided us, were developed, nurtured, and constantly reinforced.
For many youth, however, both then and now, those same opportunities were not possible. It is for these reasons that I ask you to consider learning more about TMYL and joining “Todd’s Team”. Our staff, board of directors, and many dedicated volunteers work hard to better deliver on our mission. This is all made possible through the generosity of our donors. Many of your contemporaries have already contributed – recently we received donations ranging from Partner ($100/year) to Player’s Box level ($5000/year)!
I hope you will join the other Court One alumni who are committed to seeing Lansing and its youth thrive.
On behalf of TMYL, I thank you for your time, consideration, and participation.
