NOW HIRING Tutoring  and Education Coordinator

General: Oversees and coordinates TMYL’s academic and tutoring programming

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide at-risk students with tools and supports necessary to be successful in school and in their personal lives
  • Assist staff and volunteers in preparing for and providing tutoring to students in core academic subjects, as well as providing mentoring and instruction in leadership development and life skills as taught through the USTA ACE curriculum
  • Coordinate with and serve as point of contact with volunteers (including MSU Service Learning and Drews Scholars) and staff. Communicate with volunteers throughout the week. Provide orientation and ongoing training for volunteers.
  • Establish and maintain communication with parents (at least twice a week with each parent)
  • Communicate with teachers and school support staff about participants enrolled in tutoring program as needed. Make school visits to connect with teachers in-person. Potentially attend conferences.
  • Maintain records and documentation, including, but not limited to, tutor and participant hours, report cards, evaluations, etc.
  • Develop enrichment opportunities for participants throughout the year, including financial literacy, nutrition, physical activity, art, music, etc.
  • Communicate, as needed, with Lansing Parks and Recreation staff about logistics and programming
  • Promote the tutoring program by making connections with personnel at local schools and community agencies/organizations
  • Weekly check-in and progress meetings with Executive Director

Reports to: Executive Director

Miscellaneous:

  • 20-25 hours a week to be paid bi-weekly
  • This position is an independent contractor position with up to a one-year contract term. Contracts may be subject to continuation on an annual basis.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs

Preferred:

  • Background in education and/or curriculum-development
  • Experience working with youth and families
  • Skills: excellent time management, superior organization, good interpersonal and communication skills

Todd Martin Youth Leadership needs volunteers year round in both tennis and tutoring.  Please contact Executive Director Rebecca Johnson if you are interested in volunteering as a tutor or Tennis Program Director Sheila Tansey for tennis volunteer opportunities.  Refer to the Volunteer Resources Tab for More Information.

 Tutoring:

Provide homework and tutoring help in core subjects for school age students.

Integrate life skills into each tutoring session.

Communicate and coordinate with Tutoring Coordinator about student progress, concerns, questions, and absences.

During pick up at end of tutoring session, communicate with parent regarding their student progress during tutoring session.

 Tennis:

Follow lesson plans provided by Tennis Program Director.

Provide a safe environment for all participants, staff and volunteers by ensuring that all equipment is utilized for its intended purpose.

Familiarize oneself with the tennis progressions, including different ball types and racquet sizes.

Integrate life skills into each tennis session.
